Pests are a problem everywhere, but the National Pest Management Association (NPMA) recently revealed a list of cities that need to be particularly cautious of vectors, such as fleas, mosquitoes, and ticks. They are especially dangerous because they can transmit various diseases to humans. The good news is that no city in California is among those with the greatest risk of these pests. However, that doesn’t mean that commercial and home pest control should be taken lightly. In fact, even the NPMA advises that everyone throughout the country should apply these tips:

  • Stay indoors while mosquitoes are active – these pests are capable of transmitting the West Nile virus and Dengue fever which can be extremely dangerous. Their peak activity periods are dusk and dawn and it is recommended to stay inside during these times
  • Use an insect repellent – make sure that it has at least 20% DEET, lemon eucalyptus oil, or picaridin. Additionally, wearing light-colored clothes also repels insects
  • Protect your skin physically – if you are going outside, especially when camping or hiking, you should wear long sleeves to protect your arms. The same rule applies to your legs, so make sure to use long pants, too. Regardless of this, you should avoid tall grass as ticks love living there and you risk getting spotted Ricky Mountain Fever or Lyme disease
  • Inspect your body for ticks – if you suspect a tick for whatsoever reason, perform a thorough inspection of your body. In case you have ticks, the crucial thing is to notice them as soon as possible to reduce the potential disease risk
  • Call a Professional – just search for “pest control near me” and find a reliable provider, such as Bug Guys Pest Control

What Are the Ten Cities with the Greatest Vector Risk?

NPMA estimated weather conditions this year and paid special attention to levels of precipitation and temperature. Vectors love rainfalls and warm weather conditions, especially when they find standing water to use as a location for breeding. According to NPMA, here are the 10 cities that have the greatest risk of vector pests in summer 2018:

  • Birmingham – this city in Alabama had high precipitation levels and temperatures, including one of the warmest Mays in history, which can positively affect the number of mosquitoes in the area
  • Charlotte – ticks love this city, but the citizens should also be careful or mosquitoes due to the rainy spring and summer
  • Chicago – the precipitation levels were the highest in the city’s history and the residents should be aware of mosquitoes
  • Detroit – another area where there is a high mosquito risk
  • Houston – Hurricane Harvey left behind plenty of ponds with standing water and, combined with the heat wave, this is the perfect neighborhood for mosquitoes to reproduce
  • Jacksonville – plenty of rain and temperatures above average are the reason why the citizens need to be careful of vectors for the remainder of the season
  • Miami – rains might not be surprising, but Miami saw the most spring rain in over 20 years
  • Philadelphia – both mosquitoes and ticks present a threat, especially since Pennsylvania is the state with the most cases of Lyme disease in the entire country
  • Washington, D.C. – the country’s capital is also at risk for vectors thanks to Alberto, the subtropical storm that hit the city in May
  • West Palm Beach – this city’s residents should also be alerted for mosquitoes

The crucial thing to keep in mind is that the list is alphabetical and that NPMA didn’t rank the cities by the level of threat from vector pests.
